All of the above. Really, since the human brain stores it's memory in tiny little pieces all over the place, with random associative criteria, when you think of any one thing, you get flashes of all imagery that may also be associated with that memory. Your brain just learns to filter out the extraneous material and concentrate on linearly projecting the relevant imagery.
