They are not necessarily better than cats. Each have its place. Cats tend to like to cat mice, and other small critters to eat and most of the time are less social than dogs. Dogs tend to want attention and so they will do whatever they can to please.

That's cool, so we come from the same place, I had animals like you do, haha. Well the truth is that cats are smarter than dogs, dogs are just more playful most of the time. Cats hunt. Dogs dig. Cats go in the litter box, and dogs scratch at the door or wine till the go outside...OR they just pee & poop right there. I love them both but I really want a cat because I have never had one.

Because we are an attention-craving people. Cats don't need your affection. They want it, but don't need it. Dogs need it and want it. They're constantly making you feel wanted, therefore, we tend to lean in their direction. It's the same in people-to-people interaction.
Also, because cats don't need the attention, they get neglected. When they're neglected, they become unpleasant. The same is true for any animal or person, but it happens more with cats because of my above statement. As a result, people get a bad idea about cats, then they don't want them and/or treat them badly, and so the cycle starts and continues.
To answer your question: Dogs are better than cats because of ignorance.

A dog thinks that he is a member of your pack. He looks at you like you are another dog. Dogs in a pack depend on each other the same as your dog depends on you. A dog is happy when he has found his proper place in the pack.
Cats on the other hand look at you only as a source of food. A cat has scent glands near it's whiskers. When he rubs against you he is marking you. Cats will tolerate each other when their is human intervention or they are raised together but they are generally not a social creature.
Feed the cat, let him have attention when he comes to you, but treat the dog as acompanion because that's what he is.

they're not. better is a subjective term anyway. its all a matter of opinion. dogs are more popular because they tend to be more attentive and affectionate... most people respond well to that...
