You can convert a quadratic function from standard form to vertex form by completing the square.
1. Factor out the leading coefficient.
2. Add and subtract (b/2)2 .
3. Simplify.

y(x)=x^2+6x+8

b=6 => 6/2=3 => 3^2=9

y(x)+9=x^2+6x+9+8
y(x)+9=(x+3)^2 + 8
y(x)=(x+3)^2 -1

Now you are in vertex form!
