It's actually pretty simple: Paranoia. Most of the dictators/cult leaders who commit mass murders or mass suicides have very paranoid personalities and think they are being betrayed or that others are out to get them. That's pretty common among dictators like Josef Stalin or cult leaders like David Koresh. You also see that trait in people like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two students who went on a shooting spree in Columbine.

In a couple of instances, it can be blamed on drugs that cause paranoia. Not many people know this, but Hitler was a methamphetamine addict who received 2 high-dosage injections of the stuff a day, and he did it all throughout his years as the leader of Germany. It would be literally impossible for anyone to do that much methamphetamine without showing symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. The same is true of cult leader Jim Jones, who was notorious for abusing prescription amphetamines for years before he made his followers commit mass suicide.

Basically, with these types of people, they have a lot of control over others, but because of that, they are constantly suspicious of others trying to take their power. In the case of Stalin, he was constantly paranoid that political rivals in the communist party posed a threat to him, so something as simple as criticizing him was an act punishable by death.

They are also arrogant -- you have to have a huge ego to be paranoid, because to think everyone is out to get you implies you must be someone important. Which is why if you notice in places like Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Russia, they were absolute leaders who wanted the masses to see them as the only hope of their nations. With religious cults it's the same principle: Jim Jones' followers were lead to literally believe that Jim Jones was their only way of getting to heaven.

Misconcepts, ill teachings, misunderstanding all about religion.
Not understanding that everyone who born has equal right to live in this world added by the bad system created by a few selfish people who think they can live at the cost of many others.

A bad childhood, your dad beat you, you were sexually harmed as a child, your parents divorced or argued, your dad walks out. Anything to make a child unhappy and hold a grudge will probably last with them and they might take to the step of mass murder

These kinds of people have a switch turned off in their brains, the compassion and empathy switch as it were.
