I was reading the novel " A Seperate Peace " and in one of the chapters it mentions how the kids had let apple cider ferment for a couple of months. It turned into alcohol, they drank it, and got drunk. Could you really do this with apple cider or anything else? Is it safe?

It would be more likely to turn into vinegar than hard cider

This is absolutely true. After a month or so in the fridge, cider "hardens." That is, the taste gets a beer-like quality, and you can get drunk from it. I don't know the science behind it, but my grandpa is an apple farmer, and I have had hard cider many times.

I am thinking this could be the case, but if you do accomplish it, you are bootlegging, aren't you? I think you need a license to manufacture alcohol to drink. You can always Google "bootlegging" or something to find out how people used to do it, and if apple cider would ferment enough to become an alcoholic drink.
(Gosh, with that hint, I hope the Alcohol and Firearms Dept or whoever they are don't come after me!)

Yeah, apple cider can ferment. That's what people mean when they refer to "hard cider." I suppose that's where the product people got the idea to name their drink "Mike's Hard Lemonade."

Fermentation creates alcohol. A long time ago, some neighbor kids tried this and had horrible diarrhea for two days. So, if you like that sort of thing- have at it.!
