before a workout, you should definitely have a lot of water but you should do that always. You should also have a light meal consisting of either carbs or fiber or a little of both. I usually have a piece of toast and a banana. After the workout, depending on the intensity, you should get at least a little protein in your body and rehydrate. A small protein shake should do the trick unless you had a very strenuous workout. Remeber to hydrate!
Good Luck!

I'm assumming you mean a weight lifting workout. For weights you need to eat a good combo of protein and carbs (to make a complex carbohydrate)....think beans and rice...It's what you eat afterwards that is crucial....you need to cram 30 grams of protein in your body within 25 minutes of your workout to get the best results.....think protein smoothie or one of those protein bars....30 grams...NO MORE, because it can do liver damage.
For cardio workouts you do more carbs to protein, and bring the protein down to 15 grams.

bananas and strawberries are great pre workout b/c they are loaded with healthy carbs you'll need for fuel during your workout. you can make them into fruit smoothies with a little soy milk. post workout try to eat a healthy salad or grilled veggies with a lean chicken breast or fish fillet, both high in protein.
