Actually, it is possible that you are not actually afraid of anything. What you're describing sounds more like anxiety. In any case, if you're afraid or anxious it will usually come out in your dreams -- so start a dream journal and see if you can find a pattern.

never be afraid to quit asking the question "why?". Thats how to get to the bottom of it. Ask why everytime you think that you have come to the answer.

I've gotten through a lot of fears (rejection, failure, success, responsibility, caring for people, etc) using this method.
Be prepared for some answers that are tough to swallow and might make you feel like crap for a while - don't worry, its just a phase of your development OUT of that living in fear mode. It will get better. It might be handy to keep a journal just of the things that you have done in the course of day - stuff that you are afraid of that you do anyway - it will show you how much you can do despite fear - and then it seems pretty silly to keep it anyhow.

I still fear ghosts and I am 27. Something inside me thinks there is something in the darkness. I can't say that I have ever seen them but I just can't shake the feeling. I am not scared of people however because I feel at least against them I can fight back. My Glock can help me deal with people and wild animals but what do you do with some crazed specter harassing you! What pray tell!

Maybe you were given up for adoption by your mother and suffered a primal wound that has left you unable to trust anyone, especially yourself, and you own mind and your ability to handle life's little problems?
