Why do people keep on asking what they should get for their relatives & friends?

You know them better than I do. What are their hobbies, taste in music, etc?

They are probably looking for neutral suggestions. I had given someone an idea on Yahoo Answers for a Christmas gift and I got Best Answer. It helped them think of something that they had not originally thought of.

I think some people are bored and can't think of anything better to ask.
