against physical punishment of children,,,, you could talk about all hitting is violence,,,,, that children who are hit are more likely to hit,,,,,,we dont punish anyone else this way (speeding ticket etc) so adults dish out a punishment they wouldnt accept for theirselves,,,,, how other methods work for discipline,,,,, etc
any topic, that you can back up with facts, and offer new concepts to be considered, will fit into that category,,,,
current controversal topics are usually good,,,,,as people will most likely care about and already of formed an opinion on them,,,,,

The world has many problems that are largely ignored although they need to be addressed expeditiously. Your objective is to persuade you audience to agree that the problem needs immediate attention and should be given a top priority by our government leaders.
1. Global warming is a hot one that VP Al Gore has been working on for some time. You might want to champion some other issue, since this one has already been getting lots of press.
2. Another is the world-wide problem of displaced people who are living in refugee camps and have no hope of returning home. Many are children and number in the many millions. This is not a new problem, however. Therefore, it might not be considered "interesting."
3. Another hot topic, that I like to speak of, is the technological advances in genomics and nanoscale sciences that purportedly will move civilization forward with unprecedented change for the next 100 to 150 years. However, there is currently a confounding lack of science students entering college. This alone could cause the USA to lose its economic position in the world and the affluence we have enjoyed through the last century. As a speaker, the challenge is to persuade the audience that science should be taught as a basic skill in elementary schools, and that resources to aid students who are pursuing careers in science should urgently be made available.
Following is a Toastmasters International tutorial on persuasive speech making:
The title of the tutorial is: "The Seven Habits of Persuasive Speakers” It is written by a U.S. national forensics champion who shares fundamental strategies for influencing an audience. I recommend that you read it for ideas and for stratigic organization of your speech.
Good Luck!

(1) Political topic:
Arguing that either side of a religious issue (whether abortion, gay marriage, or prayer in school) cannot be endorsed by the state without imposing on religious freedom of the opposing side; therefore all such matters must be mediated and resolved by consensus of the parties before the state can pass a law.
Quote: Amendment 1 on religious freedom and Amendment 14 on equal protection of the laws
(2) Religious history:
Arguing that if Buddha prophesied the coming and return of Christ as the "Maitreya Buddha" that makes Buddha a true prophet (because he bears witness to Christ as Messiah) so that Buddhism is a true teaching. If Jesus Christ fulfills divine laws given by Moses as well as natural laws given by Buddha, this fulfills scripture that he governs both the gentiles and the churched as two folds of the same flock; that he joins the laws of man and the laws of God as one; and that in Christ there is no more separate of Jew from Greek/Gentile but all are made one in Christ Jesus.

How about Indian gaming? What does Indian gaming revenue bring to each tribe and the states supporting it? What moral and ethical values do Indian gaming tribes contribute to their people? Are the only people who ultimately benefit from Indian gaming the Chief's, council members, mass marketers?

There are many answers for this. I would suggest to pick a petition that you agree/don't agree with and give reasons why.
