Approximately half of all Z8`s produced were exported and sold in the USA. The vehicle was built in Germany.

"Z8 bodies are constructed and painted at BMW’s Dingolfing plant, approximately 60 miles northeast of Munich; the front and rear bumpers are manufactured at the nearby Landshut facility. Completed bodies are then shipped to a dedicated area of the company’s Munich factory for final assembly. There, a small team of highly skilled craftspeople largely hand-build Z8s in 31 assembly steps. The complete construction and finishing process takes about 10 times as long as that for a 3 Series sedan".

The Z8 was sold in the US but in very small numbers. It is certainly much nicer than the Z4 but it was nearly twice the cost. The Z8 is being prepared for a 'remake' and you are correct that the Z4 has not been a big hit. BMW is working on a Z2 and a replacement for the Z4.

The Z8 was sold in the United States, but the reason it didn't sell as much as the Z4 was simply the cost was prohibative to most average buyers at 100k plus.

It was sold in the U.S. Very limited production. Ran about $100,000 and was a unique vehicle. My dealer as an Alpina Z8 (one of only 100) sitting in the entrance to the service bay. Awesome.

it was sold here but as mentioned you dont see many $100K cars. ive seen about 5 different ones around my city. the alpina was made during the last run of the Z8s before it was discontinued. i think they stopped making them after the subframe issues were discovered.

It was sold in the US market, however BMW engineers have discovered there were cracks starting to form in the frame and subframe of the vehicle.
I would love one, but if it broke on me then I would be livid.

I think it was. But it was a limited edition and rather hard to find on the streets or as a second hand car.
