It was alot easier, not as much technology then very few autopsy's and local police were less likely to try a case with little evidence, especially when it might make them unpopular with electorate. I think mercy killing still happens today just no as easily... after all if a primary caregiver over medicates someone who is already sick ??? Who will testify will a M.E. catch it ... lots of people die due to medical error .

Wow, what a question. Probably, people more or less just did what was convienent back then. The death penalty was used quite often however people more or less handled their own problems. The science and technology that we have today is a million years ahead of what they had. Remember dna evidence was only started around the time that the OJ jury let an obvious killer go free. This was not about evidence but reverse racism. I am getting off the subject but things were alot different back then. For instance, it was ok to beat your wife and abuse your children. The head of the household was basically in charge, not the govt. I am guessing that for the most part mercy killing was ok. People were not very deep thinkers about things in those days.

I would bet it was more illegal then than now. It is more of a religious thing and the U.S. has become more secular with time.
