The snowbush, (a.k.a. mountain whitethorn), Ceanothus cordulatus, is adapted to grow vigorously at high altitudes, up to 10,000 feet elevation. Growth isa much slower at lower altitudes. It has thorns to discourage browsing by herbivores. It also has symbiotic bacteria in its roots that fix atmospheric nitrogen for its prodiction of amino acids,(and proteins), necleic acids and other vital biochemicals. That fixed nitrogen becomes available to other plants after the snow bush dies, decomposes and provides these nitrogenous compounds to the soil, like clover.
The plant is fire resistant as it stump sprouts after a fire, while other plants die.
Fire helps the plant's seeds outer coat to crack open and then it germinates. (cold also helps.)
Hope that helps.
