(2) Read together as a regular activity
(3) break down words into letters and sounds
that can be practiced so the words can be recognized

(5) try writing on cards to give to someone in the family.
try to tie in with a purpose for reading and writing something

You need to tell us what 'the reading' is. It sounds like parents were to read something that had conflict in it to/with their child(ren). If so, the question is likely asking you to think of ways to help kids 'deal with' or process the conflict in a healthy way.

The first, most basic idea would be to talk about it with children and find out how they feel and let them ask questions.
