My neice was a queen and my grandson was a king. First a few students are nominated by the class. Then you pass ballots out and the whole senior, junior what ever votes for the one he/she wants to win. Then it is announced at the prom, along with their court, which are the runner ups. Then the King and Queen get crowned and they start the dancing. You don'[t have to be popular to win nor do you have to be smart or rich. It is up to the students to elect so the precious doesn't matter.

usually it ends up the most popular people end up getting prom queen and king. Anyway, atleast when I was in high school, the students voted for who they wanted as queen and king and in the prom court. Like most high schools it was the most popular kids who got it.
