Iron Curtain is a phrase made by Sir Winston Churchill in 1940's. It referred to Russia's isolation policy after World War II. They set up trade barriers and rigid censorship that cut off Russia and its Eastern European countries from the rest of the world.

The Iron Curtain took physical form in the shape of border defences between the countries of the western and eastern blocs. These were some of the most heavily militarised areas in the world.
