I live down south (US south) and have become friends with somebody who just recently moved here from up north. I never really realized how "country" me and my family were, until she pointed it out (in a nice way...she wasn't rude). But she said its just the little stuff, like the way we talk (obviously)..the fact that my granny makes her own medicine (with whiskey and Hore Hound candy)....my uncles wedding (took place at our pond at night...every body brought their guitars and "partied" pretty much).....and then of course there are big differences. She says you about need a passport to come down here, but in a good way.

In all honesty I have never been to a part of the US besides the southern states....is it really that different?

Thanks for the answers!

Yes it is. But that's not a bad thing. It's just different. I moved here from up north , but I love blue collar TV because there are blue collar folks all over. We can all identify with them. I was married in a park. My mother leased the park, & did the food (she worked for a caterer), my cousin made my cake. My mother also made my dress. My father was an archie bunker type. He was disappointed that I wasn't a son. I am divorced & living with a man from here for 3 years. It's great. If you don't try new things, you'll never know what you missed.

Yes.. different areas of the US are completely different than others. The South is completely different from the Florida Keys, which is totally different than the New York area, which is radically different from the Pacific Northwest areas. It's definantly interesting seeing the different parts of the same country. :)

They could be considered odd, but definitely in a good way. Little regional differences like that are what makes this country worth sticking around in, IMO.

EDIT: Is it just me, or did John s (the guy below me) completely misread the question?

Yes it is you maybe should point out in a nice way just how ignorant you friend is to her. It all depends on what part of the country you are in compared to where you are from whether you are ignorant of smart. Not only that but there are differences between the urban areas and the rural areas with in the same region of the country. Don't let in bother you. Since she is the new girl in town it is her job to conform to fit in, not your job to change to suit her.

Nope. When I moved to the south I had friends who were somewhat like your family and I pointed many things out that they really never paid much attention to.
