Before I call a repairman what would cause a refrigerator that
was somewhat quiet to all of a sudden sound very loud? Maybe
there is a simple way to resolve the problem. For instance there
may be ice build up on the fan. Of course it is a self-defrosting
fridge. Thanks..........

even though it is a self defrosting freezer it may need u to defrost it because their might be ice down inside the tube that lets the water drain away and the ice has built up on the fan or a piece of ice could have fallen down inside the air shoot.

Check to see if there is ice build up or maybe a renegade ice cream bar is stuck in the fan.

You may want to pull out the fridge and see if there is any moisture in the condensate pan when the defrost cycle kicks on. If the drain tube at the bottom center rear of the freezer is plugged. If it is, your fridge isn't defrosting correctly.

I don't know about extremely loud, but it's normal for the compressor in most refrigerators to kick in and out periodically. That's where most of the noise will come from in a refrigerator under normal operating conditions.

Do you have an ice maker? That might be the problem. My refrigerator had a similar problem.
