Depends on your definition of "worst".

The worst kind of damage a computer virus can do to a computer is to wipe the FLASH BIOS. The effect of this is that the computer will become completely unusable and you'll have to return it to the factory.

The worst kind of damage a computer virus can do to *you* is leak sensitive information (like the password you use for Internet banking), allowing to an attacker to siphon your money. Or it can allow an attacker to use your computer for criminal activities, so that when the police start tracing the hacker, they knock on your door and not on his.

A virus could delete system files (fixed by reinstall) cause harmful system activity (overheat and damage system) steal your windows reg key (invalidate your system, so that windows won't install or update properly), use your system as a virus server or spam email machine (use up your bandwidth) and basically steal personal info that you do have on your computer, enough so that identity theft is possible...

but if none of that is a problem for you...

Depending on the virus, they can do all sorts of things. If your downloading porn, stop. Porn is know to drag little virus's along with your getting off. Virus's can do any of the following:
-Render a hard drive useless
-transfer into other devices that hook to your computer such as cell phones, pda's, some mp3 players ect..
-Virus's can export personal information
-They can do absolutely nothing except slow you internet down

I've even heard of virus's affecting your power supply (i.e. blowing up your computer)
