He quietly went mad and exiled himself to live as a wild man in the woods, naked and eating roots and berries. He stayed that way for at least a couple of years, until a fellow knight chanced thru and was able to restore him to sanity.

he went on the quest for the Holy Grail but he knew because of his love for Guinevere he would never find it. this was to be left to a knight who was free of earth desires and thus Sir Galahad was the one who found the Holy Grail.
