It exploded up and out. During this process, the side of the mountain either blew out as well or collapsed. The atmospheric particle density indicates that something exploded up and it was a big explosion!

Not really. What happened was that the pressure became so great that a part of the mountain side actually collapsed

yes back in 80 i think. my dad told me about that when they were worried about it erupting again not that long ago, with in the last year i think.
