Have you considered any of these?
-- A new CD or two
-- An MP3 Player
-- A small Stereo System
-- New clothes (kinda lame though =P)
-- New bike, scooter, or skateboard
Of course if you don't know what to pick up you can always purchase a "Gift Card" from Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, or other store and then he can use them to get what he feels like the next time he goes to those stores.
Or If your really at a loss for what to get him you can give him a birthday card with cash inside (at least $20) that will be enough for him to get a book, CD, or other small gift.
He is your boyfriend... you could show him a part of you he hasn't seen yet... of course this depends on how long you've been together, how well you know each other, and if your comfortable doing that sort of thing. If you go this route NEVER take pictures/video and give them to your boyfriend (this one or any future boyfriends) they might get vendictive and put them on the web if if you dump them.
If your not comfortable with this option, DO NOT do it, its just an idea... and most 14 year old boys (jocks, nerds, goths, punks, hippies, doesn't matter) are facinated with nudity and sex. Maybe that's what he wants but doesn't think he should ask.
My advice would be to play it safe and do the "Gift Card" or the "Birthday Card & Cash" options. The rest are just ideas you may not have considered.

Get him a gift card for a local movie theater or gift certificate to a local video store. Then you can add snacks, etc. if you want. Or get him a DVD of a favorite movie or TV series. Books are an awesome idea.Nothing dorky about reading.

Keep it simple and not too expensive, say under 20. How about a nice bottle of aftersahve though he might now shave yet. Or, how about a nice sweater that compliments his eye color (and maybe your favorite or his favorite color).
Since he likes to read, do you know his favorite author or subject. Go to a used book store and get a very good copy of a very old book of his favorite author. OR get him a DVD on the subject he likes or by his favorite author.
Playboy is NOT a good idea.
You could get a nice frame and put a picture of the both of you.
Remember it is the thought that counts, not the cost.

Definetely dont purely provide him money! Thats some thing he probably wont choose after having an excellent style of difficulty attempting to discover some thing you need. Get him some thing very own. discover out his well-known activities group then get him a jersey or hat and then dangle out and watch the group play a game, if the sport isnt on good now then discover somebody who has a game taped or some thing. Merry Christmas and robust luck!

You should get him a giftcard to a bookstore, like Borders or Barnes & Noble. Or even a discount bookstore (which would be better, so he can get more books for less). Alot of more introverted guys (which is the way he seems) like to choose what they get, so a giftcard's great. Sometimes guys can be more visual, so that's probably why he doesn't know what he wants off the top of his head. With a giftcard, he can see everything before him.

If he likes book, why don't you get him a journal. You could write something nice on the inside cover or the first page, and then he could fill in the rest with whatever he wants (hopefully about you!...grin). It's something different, and something that you can personalize for him.

Well, first of all you guys have only been dating for 3 months! If you want to get him a present then get something generic. A book would be fine. Don't be surprised though if he doesn't get you anything. 3 months isn't very long to start trying to get into the whole gift giving thing.
