Merlin asked that child that was to be born of the union be given to him for safe keeping. Merlin knew that Arthur would be in danger from enemies of the king, and even himself, and wanted to ensure the survival of the child he knew would be the greatest king to ever rule Britan. He also wanted the child to be raised among nobles, but not as a prince so that he (Aurthur) could better understand the common people.
