"HOLLYWOOD - Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow's recent comments branding Americans not as civilized or intelligent as their English counterparts has sparked fury in her homeland.
The Los Angeles-born actress made her remarks to a Portuguese newspaper last weekend, and almost immediately radio stations across America were besieged with angry callers regarding the Shakespeare in Love beauty's comments.

She says, "I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology.

"The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans. I love the English lifestyle. I'm not as capitalistic as America."

However, one caller blasted back saying, "If she feels that way we are far better off without her."

MY COMMENT: I mean, she was made rich because of us Americans buying into her talent. I for one will not support anything she is connected to or any of her movies. It makes me sick. She needs to stay in Britan and never come back here.

I have yet to understand why we tolerate movie stars who make millions of dollars to simply live like royalty. They really don't do anything signifigant for humanity. We should not pay 15 bucks a ticket to the movies simply to give some pampered HAM another huge paycheck.

What's that saying about biting the hand that feeds you ?
Paltrow's not that pretty anyway, kinda' pasty.

Well, sorry but it's the truth. And I'm not proud of it. The British are so much better educated than Americans it's shameful. They don't have a culture that thinks that smart kids, good students, should be targets or derided. Any graduate of the English school system is far better educated than Americans. Don't believe me? Read some of the letters on this Answer forum! Even their poorest people can discuss the humanities (at the very least) better than some of the sorry professors I've had to sit still in front of.

As far as civilized, they've got the upper hand perhaps. Good lord, they've been a nation far longer than us. Now how will you define civilized? Could take many forms, but let's just consider it as the sum total of existence and they've got that. I don't think they've got the same degree of idiot Hip Hop culture, either, not as many dolts with their pants at half-mast mumbling through their sullen faces. So they are probably more civilized than we are, and absolutely better educated.

They'd be as capitalistic as we are if they were successful financially, but we've got them beat hands down there. At least, we do for now, until the outsourcing of our jobs and our trade imbalances catch up with us.

So she's right. Deal with it. Take a good look at our culture and what it's become over the last 25 years. And just deal with it.

On the other hand, she's an *ss for saying that in public. So the hell with her. I'm not a big fan of her, either, so who cares what she says?

No, you have to remember that the media will turn anything around so it is in their favor. If they can make it look like she said something bad they will, so they can sell more magazines. I'm sure it's not all it's cracked out to be, and if it is, oh well then! Life goes on no matter what Gwyneth thinks.

I really don't care what she thinks, but I do wish she would take a few buddies with her...george clueless and julia nonsense.....I actually have always said we should drop california into the pacific...they are a bunch of immoral imbeciles, why do you pay any attention to them. Gwy(with the funky name and a child named after fruit) isn' a great actress at all. The movies today are trash and totally not worth my time or money!

There are things I don't like about American people, too. There are cultures that I believe we would benefit by emulating. Not everything, just certain things. For instance, the people of the Netherlands are much more tolerant than are the people of the U.S.

We Americans tend to take personally comments made to others countries by our own citizens. But we shouldn't. It is just an opinion and it doesn't mean she necessarily prefers another country over the U.S. WE ARE NOT PERFECT, you know.

Wierd, I'm mexican-american and not at all partiotic, but I feel offended. WTF?! I've been to england and if we Americans are capitalist then she has clearly not really seen the english who are very egotistical. I mean I know that America has a very public negative image, but dont offend us by comparing us with the english, that's just wrong.. again I'm offended.

gwyneth paltrow is one of my favorite actresses. i didn't hear about her denegrating remarks until i read your question.
i feel completely disappointed in her. however, i'd like to read the article from the portuguese newspaper to judge for myself if her derogatory remarks were literal or taken out of context. we all know how ANY newspaper can twist and distort the truth to create a controversial story that will up the sale of papers.

I'm not Americanbut if I were, I would have been furious. She should have just kept her opinion to herself - it's so irrelevant and completely insensitive of her to say that in public. What the heck was she thinking?? I guess its a good thing her hubby's rich since she's gonna be frigging poor after that comment, huh?

I feel she is entitled to her own opinion. Don't really see why I would deny myself the pleasure of her talent by "boycotting" her future projects just bcuz she expressed her thoughts. Do we start cutting out everyone who doesn't think that we (Americans) are the best at everything? There's alot to b said for tolerance.

No, it doesnt bother me because she is a complete snob with nothing to be snobby about. I could care less what she thinks of America. I just feel sorry for the good citizens of England who have to deal with her now.
