If it is truly a formal dance, ladies should wear dresses. In the winter, a longer dress is normally suggested. Pants are difficult to dress up enough.
It certainly could be argued that pants *should* be allowed, but then maybe men should be allowed to wear dresses. Regardless, current formal style is dresses for the ladies and suits or tuxes for men, depending on how formal it is. If he's wearing a tux, you need a dress. Borrow, rent or buy second hand. Many of my friends have found lovely dresses at resale shops at half or less of rack price.

Just wear one of the dresses that you already have. If it's formal, then I'd wear a dress and not pants.

I definitely wouldn't listen to any of the guys here. They don't know what they're talking about. You can make pants look formal. Black pants with a really cute top would work. In any case, your boyfriend is the only one who's really going to care what you look like, and if he's a real man, he'll say you look pretty no matter what. Good luck!

Wear a dress. Any girl can wear pants. You'll stand out if you wear a dress. You don't have to spend money...borrow something, or wear something you have already.
