For a proverb as in a fable, the best example I can give, because it actually came true, is the fable about the heron and the frog.
The frog was mad at the heron for eating its eggs. So it tricked the heron by telling it to protect its eggs by seeking help of the mongoose to eat the snake that was eating the heron's eggs. When the heron did this, the mongoose ate more eggs than the snake. So the moral was not to take advice from your enemies.
Although this ancient story from India is centuries old, the very same mistake happened in more recent times. In an attempt to control the snakes eating the eggs of endangered birds in Hawaii, mongooses were introduced. But where the mongoose is not native, it has no natural predator. So the population exploded with mongooses eating the bird eggs at a faster rate than the snakes. So efforts were made to kill off the mongoose population, as environmentalists scramble to cap the damage to rare birds lost every day.
So in this case, the moral is to learn from history so we don't repeat it.
