it has always struck me as a violent, crowded, inconvenient place

true it has alot of art and entertainment but its so expensive that maybe only 20% of the people are actually able to afford and enjoy that. the cost of living there is way higher than other american cities yet the pay is found to be no higher than a city like houston.

It is not really as violent as it seems: it's all about numbers, such that when you have 1,000 people in a town, there is little violence and when the town gets to be 2,000 there is twice as much, and when the town has 8,000,000, there is more. Statistics show that there are more violent places in the US, even though they are smaller.

Well, it is crowded, but people adjust and act in such a way as not to interfere with each other - this makes them seem to be unfriendly, but in reality, they are being accommodating to each other: fold the paper small in the subway, walk fast, have exact change, know what you want before you ask, etc.....

It could be inconvenient, but really, if New York doesn't have it, it probably doesn't exist, in a way :O).

Their are always negative things about any city in this world Why not look for the positive. Where else can you find any food in the world, located in one city. The best museums, galleries, food, skating in the middle of busy city. Food "a la carte", great shopping, movies. True, there are bad aspects of NYC but I wouldn't celebrate winter or Christmas any where else (and I've celebrated in different parts of the USA). Take a leap of faith and give it a chance, you never know what might happen in the CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS!!!! I LOVE NEW YORK!!!!!

You could phrase that question as why do people like to be in a city where there is great theater, art, music, food, employment opportunities, and a continuous zest for life in a myriad of languages, for all ages, one of the least violent in the U.S. with a pretty damn good public transportation system. Gee, I don't have a clue, they must be crazy.
(Oh yes, it's crowded ... as like in city, where a lot of people live.)
