The Irish receive an automatic berth if they finish in the top 6 of the BCS standings; if a non-BCS school qualifies, the Irish are guaranteed a spot with nine wins or a top-10 finish. They are BCS-eligible if they win nine games and finish in the top 12.

They don't automatically go. There are two bowls, not including the BCS, in which Notre Dame are invited to if the bowl selection committee can not fill the void.
Brut Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX
Big East / Notre Dame / Big XII
Toyota Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL
Big East / Notre Dame / Big XII
Also, Navy, who is not in a conference, is eligible for a BCS bowl as an at-large, but also could play in the:
Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, NC
ACC / Navy / Big East
Hope that helps

If they come in the top 10 in the BCS standings they will automatically qualify for one of the 5 bcs bowl. But they need at least 6 wins(like ne other team) to be bowl-eligible. Even though they tend to be overrated every year, a terrible 5-win Notre Dame team wont get a bowl game.

i am a norte dame fanatic, they have some sort contract if they only lose 2 games a year they are automatically in a BCS. i think it is a bunch of crap because they are not worthy, though i think the game could go either way. norte dame has not held its own against top 8 teams in awhile, with the exception of the USC LOSING effort last season. in the bowel game they where blew out last season. this season there where teams that would have been dominated i think by the way michigan and usc blew away ND, had those teams been playing them:Georgia tech, Michigan state, North Carolina.
good question?
i do think florida vs ohio state is interesting match up, i like that better then seeing michigan get a rematch, as equally as it would have not been fair to even consider ND for a title shot if they had beat usc because of there lack of performance in big games,
P.S. GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!

Part is because they are eligible due to their ranking. Part is due to the money the bowl will receive because of their following. But a part is due to the BCS rule that each confernce can have no more than 2 teams in the 5 BCS games. The SEC and Big Ten both have 2. Which would leave the choices down to Cal, ND, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, WV, Nebraska or a non-bcs conference team. Of those the one who will make the most money is ND.
Basically it all comes down to the money.

Even though I'm a Notre Dame fan I can admit this without bias: simply put, it's all about money, and ND will bring in the money. Period. It's sad, but college football is pathetically more about profits than about competition.

Politics. Notre Dame is the damsel of the BCS. They go 10-2 without a conference playing games against Army and Navy, and them crap, and the only two tough games on theire schedule they get killed. Hmmmmm. Again, my answer in one word is politics.

Because they're notre dame. But it's going to be great to watch them get stomped by LSU, brady quinn will be begging to be benched. You think the USC game was ugly, wait until those pambly wasps take on LSU.
I don't even like LSU and I'll be cheering hard for them. Just to see big fat-a-s-s Charlie Weis in pain. Though I would've loved to see him play the gators and have cheeseburgers thrown at him.
