I don't believe that it is a must, but historically, many religions have taken the "convert or die" approach. It never made much sense to me, but there must be something to it. I think many religions make believers feel that anyone that doesn't subscribe to that religion is wrong and should be converted at all costs. It never ceases to amaze me how religion can motivate people to do bad things as well as good, all in the name of a god.

Using violence to enforce religion is a blasphemy against all religion. Would you love me if I beat you every day? You would probably only feign obedience until the time came to strike back.

Love precludes violence, not to sound corny because I'm anti- religious. But for fundamentalists to use violence to enforce the observance of religious traditions is absurd.

If there religion and way of life is so good they would want to keep those religious secrets and spiritual powers to themselves.

Like the jews do.

In the past it has tried with the use of torture during the Spanish Inquisition, burning witches and Gods knows what else. this is the reason that the founding fathers felt that there should be a separation of church and state and really wanted to allow for religious freedom but keep religions power in check

Only if the government is run by fanatics. Secular governments don't usually make this mistake, so I would have to classify Communism as a kind of FIATH.

No one is trying to "convince non-believers." Violence is used against disobediance of law. It is used to deter crime.

Convince non-believers of what? That there is no God? Isn't that what non-believers already believe?
