I have on my PC right now AVG Free Edition and Ad-Aware SE Personal. I am running Windows XP on a PC, not laptop. I would like to get PC in best shape, without paying for full editions on scanners. Can anybody give me a 'list' of things to do, programs to use, in order? Maybe daily things to do to ensure pc is fast and free of viruses, spyware, etc?

-Real Time Spyware/Adware protection: Microsoft has Windows defender. It is a real time scanner for spyware and offers real time protection. It's free for genuine Windows users.

Firewall: Zone Alarm offers a free firewall, better than a windows firewall. Windows firewall only blocks inbound intrusions not outbound. Zone alarm will block both and offers to monitor your anti virus. It also monitors your outlook mail.

Others: Spybot Search and Destroy is excellent too for a manual spyware scan.

Also, have automatic updates setup for windows/microsoft updates to keep those security holes closed.

If you are really paranoid, Mozilla is nice browser versus Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer recently went an upgrade from 6.0 to 7.0. You can upgraded IE's browser but err of caution. I have seen 7.0 sometimes slow or crash a user's computer preventing access to the internet. You may want to wait until Microsoft clears up any bugs in it.

Also, every once in a while run the disk defragmenter. There is also a nice little feature built into windows. Click on start-->run-->type in sfc /scannow (there is space between sfc and the slash)and press ok. It will scan for any corrupted windows system files. It may ask for a windows cd if the corruption is bad. Usually doesn't.

I would go to the personal files and other files (if they belong to you, if not ask the owner). Delete cookies and possibly other stuff like rented games downloaded. After completion run ad ware to search for spy ware. then download EZ armor and use the anti virus scan. After you do all of this and issues still occur, then unistall and reinstall the Microsoft windows or another program. If still problems occur then email me at cpswazland@yahoo.com. P.S. Its good that some people actually care for their PCs. Keep it up. or e-mail me for fun, i hardly get email anyway.

Recommend that you install a second anti-spyware program (I like Skybot Seek & Destroy - free at download.com) and alternate between it and Ad-aware each time you scan. Because they use different list of what they consider to be "spyware", one may might something the other misses.

just run adaware daily and defrag ... other than that its more of things NOT to do .. like clutter ur harddrive ... open strange emails ... go to pron sites .. delete programs without uninstalling them ... botch driver installs - especially video drivers, should always be installed from safemode and if ur using nvidia or an ati card use drive cleaner to get rid of old drivers ... dont install thousands of programs just to try them out ... stuff like that ...
