The title has to be in the drivers name to cross the border. Doesn't matter how old or what type of vehicle. Insurance is her problem - not yours. Some cars/trucks are easier to import than others but she can figure that out.

I am an American living in Mexico. I will tell you what I can, but you should also contact a Mexican consulate and ask them. You can go to the web site listed below. Click on "English version" on the right side of page. Then on new page, click on "consular services" on the left. This will give you a list of all consulates in the U.S. Choose closest one and call or go to ask. I would recommend going there in person. Now...I believe only the documented owner can bring a car into Mexico. You must go IMMEDIATElY TO THE CAR PERMIT OFFICE as soon as you cross the border. You must show proof of ownweship (title and registration) at this office. The car must have a current tag. Then you pay about $100.00 for a sticker for the front window and accompanying paperwork. Without that sticker, you will not get far...not more than 12 miles! You should also purchase Mexican car insurance for that car BEFORE CROSSING THE BORDER. Once a car from the U.S. is brought into Mexico, it cannot be sold...it is against the law. When it is brought in, you must give the guy at the car permit office a valid credit card. They run an impression of that card. If you try to leave the country and the car is not with you, they charge you a $400.00 fine automatically. So, I believe your friend will need to come to you and get the car, pay you a dollar, you sign over the title, she/he gets it registered in her/his name, then is responsible for the rest. It ain't easy. "legalizing" a car in Mexico is VERY complicated and VERY expensive...and still can only be brought in by documented owner. Also, that car must be over 10 years old.

well first of all how old is the car? second you have to legalize the car and make the car Mexican in order for it to circulate in Mexico. you can go to several places that say the legalize American cars to become Mexican you should see these places before entering mexico. then once you reach your destination you can there do the other paper work in the state you want to legalize the car. but if your friend lives in the border you don't have to do any of these things. american cars are permitted only in border towns, if you plan to go further south you must have permission from immigration or have the car legalized to become mexican. i hope this info helps. good luck
