I sleep on my back, so my face is not in any strange position, yet experience tells me that in the morning I will look worse than I look now. Why does that happen? Why does the face relax in that way to express its tiredness?
I know that the obvious way to avoid the problem is not to hang out on Yahoo Answers till quarter past three in the morning, but its such fun helping other people!

when you sleep, fluids pool under the eyes- especially when there has been eye strain. many people get swollen like this because they rub their eyes alot too, maybe from allergies. are you rubbing your eyes when you are up late? If so, this may be contributing to the problem. You have probably seen pictures of women getting spa treatments with cucumbers over their eyes? well, cucumbers (among other things) help reduce the swelling. really, anything cool on the eyes in the morning will help shrink the tissues....cucumbers are just an easy, natural way to do it....as opposed to ice, which would be way over kill. cold rag would do too. hope this helps!

When you sleep, fluid retention expands the fatty tissue around the eyes, giving a puffy look. Later in the day, the fat becomes dehydrated and shrinks back down in size, therefore making the area look less puffy. HTH : )

If you eat a lot of salty foods or snacks before bedtime, that could contribute to the problem as well.

You are retaining water under your eyes. A quick fix for puffy eyes is to rub a little Preparation H under your eyes (UNDER not in).
