Apparently my sound card needs re-installed. How can I determine what sound card I have and re-install the driver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download Everest Home edition free off the net (google It) it will tell you what the card is and where to get drivers

Some one mentioned Lavalys' Everest home edition, which is the program I use. It works great. You can download the program at http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Everest_Home/1086844970/1
The program is absolutely free. Lavalys is no longer being developed or support, which is why you have to download it off of betanews.com.
Your sound card should have come with a installation CD. The CD has the proper driver on it. If you don't have the CD, it is not a big problem. Windows XP (or any older Windows operating systems) have generic drivers which work fine unless you have a high end sound card (e.g. Creative Sound Blaster Audigy). Usually, you can download the correct driver off the manufacturers website. If all else fails, I recommend you search Techspot.com's website for the necessary driver. Go to control panel - then system, hardware, device manager. Scroll down the list and look for sound video and game controllers. You will either see nothing listed or the items listed will have yellow marks on them. If you have nothing then there are no drivers installed - yellow marks means you have a problem with the installed drivers. Also check in the audio and sound devices section in control panel and see if your card is listed in the audio tab. If it's listed then you will know what your sound card is and then you can search for and download the dirvers. If your soundcard is part ofthe motherboard then you need to look for the disk that came with your computer as drivers should be on there. you can install those first then upgrade them if you need to.

Ok, here's what you do. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel. Choose Hardware tab on the panel, Device manger and click on the PLUS (+) sign of Sound,video and Game controllers. It will show you what soundcard you have. Next get on the internet,find the manufacturer website and download the latest driver. Usually after you install the soundcard win xp will load the generic driver for you, it's up to you if you want to use the driver from win xp or just get it from the manufacturer.
