have a 1968 chevelle with dash mounted ignition switch. prev owner lost keys, so i have to replace the whole assembly. i;m told it's supposed to come apart by putting a thin wire into the pinhole on the switchface and TURNING THE KEY.. how do you do it without the key? also, i need a wiring diagram for the wires that come from the switch, as some mods may have been made...

You may be able to get a key cut from the dealer near you if they can go back in their records far enough. This is a major long shot. If not it may be easiest to replaced the whole thing . Pulling the whole assemble out of the dash and replacing it.

It will be easier for you to remove the switch from behind the dash since you don't have the ignition key. For the wiring diagram, nothing is available on line for a '68, so you'll need a repair manual. You can get a manual here http://www.buddyandoscars.com/auto_manuals_domestic.htm for the wiring schematic, and for information on removing the switch if you're not sure how to go about it. Click on the link for Chevy, then look for the manual 'Chevrolet Chevelle, El Camino, Malibu, Laguna S-3, Monte Carlo Repair Manual 1964-1988' Good luck.

To do the wire trick you got to have the key. Take your glove box lock out and take it to a locksmith, there should be a number on the lock that is the key number for duplication.
