Well, if this one seems hard, start with this one:

x + 3 = 5

You solve it by taking 3 from each side:

x + 3 - 3 = 5 - 3

x = 5 - 3

x = 2

OK so far? Now, for the problem you give, the only new wrinkle is that you have a fraction. Start the same way:

x + 3 - 3 = 9/2 - 3

x = 9/2 - 3

Now, to subtract 9/2 from 3, get the common denominator. 3 = 6/2. So...

x = 9/2 - 6/2 = 3/2

x = 3/2 is your answer.

If the common denominator part is losing you, get a little help from the teacher.

Subtract 3 from each side, which means x = (9/2) - 3. Put your terms together and you are finished, and get (3/2), or 1.5.

x+3= 9/2
( 9/2 = 4.5)

So, x+3=4.5
Subtract 3 from both sides of equation.

X= 1.5 OR 3/2
