Liberals have brains and consider the possibility of a better way.
Although, often, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Not all Liberals appreciate this. Conservatives can take advantage of this.
Conservatives, on the other hand, believe in maintaining the status qua. In other words, keeping the same old same old. Unfortunately, the same old often involves a lazy, corrupt power structure. The fat and happy type. Conservative voters have brains, but are often told not to use them.
There are advantages to both views but in the end, neither ever holds complete control. Things are as they will be.
What makes Liberalism better is that it is always looking for ways to improve the current situation. Since there are always problems, the people who actively look for solutions come off as "the good guys". They, at least, come off better than those who want to keep things (even the bad, unfair, government(ally) dysfunctional stuff) the same.

It has allowed for things such as free speech, freedom from kings and tyrannical governments: it represents the freedom of the people to chose their won leaders, their own destiny. Liberals respect the rights of others, and often will defend your right to say what you say even if they don't agree with it. Liberals believe that all peoples are born Free and Equal, with the right to determine their own destinies.
Liberals believe that humanity can work together to find a better future for all. That doesn't' mean we will, but we can.

Both are ideologies with an assortment of sincere and self-interested practitioners attempting to frame and change policy. As there is no one right answer (the American system proves there are 2, and only 2), both are just as susceptible to virtue and deceit.

there is no answer
seriously though
liberalism ahs its benefits, they do want to "progress" but sometimes, their progressive ideas, are absolutely contradictory with anything that makes any sort of sense.
if you reversed the question, my answer would have been, "about 7 inches"
