when I did HS forensics Dramatic Interp I used a cutting from "To Kill a Mockingbird." The judges tend to eat up stuff like accents and my strength was looking really young so I chose a section that was mainly scout talking (plus scout narrates.)

But choose whatever has the right number of characters (I think we had to have a minimum of three) and something that you REALLY like. Look at your favorite books and also look at books written in 1st person. Try to steer clear of anything controversial (you want to win, and you don't want to hurt yourself by offending someone - at some schools the judges are just people's parents and they aren't necessarily well read or people who know about literature) and watch out for anything really overdone (I would imagine Harry Potter is out, for example.) make sure what you choose is active and exciting, and don't be afraid to switch around sentences or jump around a little in the book to make it really work for you.
