Which media? Media created "Pop" culture and Pop art. It's helped to stereotype various races and genders. If a white woman is the only one on an elevator and it stops and a black man gets in, does she tend to clutch her purse a little tighter and begin to run through the various self preservation movies she's stored in her head? He may be the nicest, most honest guy... But the media...
Are all gay men, limp wristed, twinkle toed fairies? The media.
Was New Orleans the only community that took it in the shorts after hurricane Katrina? There were other cities, and towns that were completely wiped off of the map. But the media made New Orleans the poster child... Right color for the color of the month club. The media.
How'd we lose the war in Vietnam? The media. It's ALL history.

Literature and the way events are recorded has always affected how history is presented. I recently discovered my blood connection to a socio-cultural group which wasn't positively recognized in the mainstream for centuries and things have come to light about these people that the power elite had hidden, or misrepresented to achieve some agenda which is beyond me. Just recently, these new accounts have forced a rewriting of the history books about this group.
I still believe that debates on history comes down to what YOU think, vs. what I think, vs. the TRUTH. In other words, I don't believe we ever get the straight goods on ANY kind of point of history without some agenda, favoritism, or slant.

This is a good question, Media affects our history because it's another way of recording history periodically and newspapers, magazines, and etc. periodicals all show major events that impact history. Without media, most of the major events in history would be latent and we would be ignorant of the world. That is why you should read the newspaper to see what is going on in the world. There are other forms of media that reflects our history such as movies and books. The Crucible is an example of media that effected history because it is telling readers about the McCarthyism in America at that time.

William Randolph Hurst instigated the Spanish American War, The Washington post made Kennedy a saint. They also brought down Nixon. Neither deserved what they got. LBJ scared us, through news releases that the Communist were knocking on doors in Hawaii, so we had to fight them in Vietnam.
More recently, Computer games are advertised on TV as being very limited so hundreds of stupid clowns camp out for two days at BEST BUYS to pay too much for something they could have next month for half the price. The media has made us think that M&M is talented and that Julia Roberts is beautiful.

when people look at history, they look at what the newspapers say and regard it as fact. the media has been a major influence in world events since the napoleonic wars. In america prior to the revolution various propaganda papers were circulated. after the american revolution the "federalist papers" played a role in giving our federal government the powers it has. the spanish-american war was started by propaganda. during WWI and WWII all countries involved produced huge amounts of posters, movies, newsreels, slogans, and other media to keep the populace all thinking the same thing. the media played a role in the civil rights movement and the riots that took place during it. it played a role in the anti war demonstrations during the vietnam war. everyone watched hanoi jane in the north vietnamese camp on TV. more recently the media has been dividing people into "red states" and "blue states" or "liberals" and "conservatives". this is to keep half the population watching what the other half's camp is doing while ignoring what both sides are doing to screw everyone.
