We're expecting a boy in April and our first name choice was Sam, but we know too many people who've named their boys Sam recently, so that kind of killed it for us.

Our second choice is Max (Maxwell James), but I'm afraid it will also be too popular.

We want something short and simple, no Tylers or Jadens or Memphis or anything like that - but we don't want the poor kid to have the same name as everyone else in his class (I had three best friends growing up in the 80s - all named Jennifer).

Any thoughts??

Thank god some rational names...I applaud you and your husband for not going with these ridiculous names that appear to frequently on this board.

Max is a great name...especially combined with James...it is a bit trendy...but with every other boy getting named Chance or Lance or Bryce or Fletcher or some other Nancy-boy name, it will be fine.

I think Max is overdone, at least with the schools my kids go to. But if you like a name, who cares if there are other Maxwells! Yours will be yours and will be special regardless of how many other kids share his name. If I had another boy I would name him Cooper! I love that name.

It's not too overdone right now, but I can easily see it becoming the next "Sam" within a year or two.
Short and simple names:
Shay
Brock
Scott (Scotty, during the baby years)
William (Will for short)
Or you could do something like Alexander James and either call him Alex (might be too popular) or A.J. for short
Ricky is cute too
Patrick
Grant
Blaine
Blair
Blake

Maddox James
Nathaniel James (nickname Nate)
Noah James
Owen James
Rogan James
Ulrich James (nickname Rick or Ricky)

Hope this helps and congratulations! :)

I only know two babies named maxwell, if that helps any. I think that Maxwell James is absolutley adorable! I also love the name Britt. It is old western style.

Good Luck,

I don't think it is to overdone. Maxwell is not that common of a name and I like the nickname Max.

I think it should be Max not Maxwell even though it goes good with the middle name James.

Go rent your favorite old movies you will find a character with a name you love. I am a huge Russell Wong fan, so I like names that have to do with him or his characters or his brothers or something. Find a name that tells a story. So when people say why did you name him that you can say well.... and it will be more than just I saw it in a baby name book.
