During the vietnam era, liberal and hippie were pretty much used together, so back then I think it really only applied to hippies. It became more mainstream during the late 80's. I specifically remember during a Bush/Dukakis debate that GHB called Dukakis a card carrying liberal for being a member of the ACLU. That to me is probably the turning point when being called a liberal was in general a bad thing. About the same time, Bloom County did a few comic strips on the "L" word.

There's nothing wrong with being called a liberal in Canada!....It could actually be a compliment saying you are open minded and accepting of others!
But in the US I believe it was during the Cold War era because people who were considered 'liberal' were often considered too close to communist and communism and that was a huge offence at the time. and that concept is based on the political spectrum with conservatism being on the right and communism and socialism on the left and liberalism being left of center but not as far left as communism.

I'd say the late 70's. When liberal judges turned violent criminals back onto the streets. Liberal congressmen kept raising taxes, and generally ran the country into the ditch.
I remember the country song went something like we're rolling down hill like a snow ball headed for hell, the best of the good life is gone. It was a real low point. The Carter years.
