i know there are many arguments to why the drinking age should be lowered, and this isnt some kid who wants to be able to drink because he thinks its cool, i really dont care, i was just thinking that if you can be randomly selected to fight and possibly die for your country, then shouldn't you be able to drink?

Your question is an age-old one, as is your reasoning that a kid who risks his life for his country should be able to drink legally. Hell, there was even a scene in a movie back in the 40's where this kid came into a bar and was refused a drink because he was too young. Then, dejectedly, he puts both his hooks on the bar, since his hands were blown off in the war. But I have to say NO: the drinking age should never be lowered. Why? Because if it is, more kids will die in alcohol-related accidents. Simple. We'd be doing them no favors. Also, if they want to drink and are under 21 they can drink on base, like I did!

Well, if I were 18 again, I'd probably say "Sure, why not?"

But, now that I'm a little bit older, and having been drunk too many times to count, I'd have to say that it would be a terrible idea. When a person is 18, they usually don't think about their own life in terms of where they will be at 30, 40, 50, 60, or older. A person at 18 subconsciously doesn't fully appreciate life - - this is not a put-down, but rather a person who speaks from bad mistakes and experiences. At 18, our minds are preoccupied with so many things. Yet, we don't think about our bodies suffering the long-term consequences of alcohol abuse, such as addiction, internal organ failure (such as the liver - ever try living without one?), or our own mental faculties. And after having personally known many relatives and friends who have abused alcohol for many years, I can tell you that it began around the age of 18. Between the ages of 18-21, people are more suseptable to becoming addicted to drugs like alcohol. And living with an alcoholic or being an alcoholic is no fun, in spite of all the funny videos on YouTube.

Quite frankly, I don't believe that an 18 year-old should be in the military, either. They should be enjoying life, going to school, falling in love, ect. And this whole idea of a draft is absolutely ridiculous - - the people who support such a notion are sadistic, in my opinion.

Be happy for the blessings God has given.

I understand your argument. And it isn't that people who are 21 and over show responsibility with alcohol, but I really think that 21 is just tempting bad fate. I mean, most 21 -25 year olds are clueless about alcohol. Think of all the 18 year olds you know ( or when you were 18 ) and think of them all being able to drink. That would be like making the age of consent 14.

Thats a very good question and argument. I remember when I first joined the military, I was old enough to die for my country, but not old enough to drink. Not saying that I wanted to get trashed, but just the fact that I am serving in the Armed Forces, I should be allowed to enjoy a drink with my food and friends.

Yes it should be. I find it hard to understand how our young men and women can go sacrifice their lives for our Country, but they cannot buy a beer or a pack of cigarettes. I'd like to back slap the idiots that came up with that cockamamie law. I can tell you what, our men and women that are fighting for our Country have every right to have that drink or ciggy. Hell, they deserve it.

It sounds sound--but its not..
One can train to defend-one can't train to handle booze.
Booze kills-destroys-all ages as you know.
Drunk driving-violence--//not just youth but old age slos.

21 is an age where maturity is still not old yet older than 18 where groups and crowds more apt more young people.

Well, like the one guy said, if you are in the service, you can drink.

But, I do think if there is a draft, it should be for everyone. Nobody should be able to get out of it just because they are in college, because it is not fair to those that cannot afford college.
