generally cornerbacks

A corner back is faster usually as he does cover on the wide side of the field whereas a safety has to biggger physically since he often has to tackle against the run more and guard the Tight End which is usually a slower bigger receiver and the Strong Safety usually covers the TEnd. The Free Safety is usually the slowest DB on the field and he is more like a centerfielder in baseball AKA John Lynch of the Broncos was the best FS for years while with the Bucs...

traditionally the safety is a bit slower, but a bit bigger. you usually want a CB that can keep up with the WR, and a saftey that can be over the top to watch the ball and correct any mistakes the CB miss, which usually involves tackling. average height of a CB is about 5'10, runs a 40 of about 4.5 or less and free safety tend to be about 6'0 and 4.6 or less, strong safety are a bit slower too and a bit heavier than free saftey. they might be 5lbs to 40lbs heavier than the FS because usually the SS will go into run support, or watch the TE

Safteys are interchangable however. John Lynch plays FS but he acts like a SS, watching TEs and comeing up into Run support. Mike Brown is a SS, but he falls back into Coverage alot of times like a FS. sometimes there are Safties that can do both really well, such as Ronnie Lott, and Brian Dawkins (more so in the past)
FS usually are called the extra man and just drops back deep to make sure no passes are going to be TDs and they are the ones that call the coverage audables.

Free Safties such as Bob Sanders, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, are increadibly fast and move back quickly to defend passes, or rush over to knockout WRs if balls are caught. SS such Adam Archuleta, Rodney Harrison, Roy Williams, Troy Polamalu, all are heavy hitters, and are (or were) great run protectors and cover TEs well, however going back into coverage like a FS they sometimes have problems getting into the backfield fast because they are a few miliseconds slower.

but it usually depends on what kind of defense. Pittsburg's defense is more physical and has big CB to ram at the line. the Bears run a cover-2 and they rely on the speed of a safety to cover the deep areas, whereas their CBs fall into a shallow zone or watches the flats, which is why they can turn the ball over so much.

Generally, I'd want my cornerbacks to be faster, in order to keep up with the receivers they're assigned to cover. However, safeties need a good deal of speed as well, as they need to be able to get to where they're needed quickly.

In general the cornerback would be faster, they are the ones who most likely will go one on one with a wideout if the defense calls for that coverage.

Cornerbacks. Many times, they are the fastest player on the team. Safeties are bigger and heavier hitters. Corners are speed guys that try to lockdown the receivers.

Usually a cornerback. DeAngelo Hall is the fastest CB in the NFL right now. He plays for the Falcons. Not Champ Bailey! (Well, In my opinion.)

all defensive backs need to be fast, but corners need to be slightly faster because they spend a lot more time in man coverage and don't have the same time and space in which to react that a safety has. deangelo hall, corner for the falcons runs a 4.15 40 yard dash, which is about as fast as anyone in the nfl
