Possibly someone related to Yuhi Kurenai. From what they've shown of the leader, they have similar eyes. However, that would be a little random and seems unlikely coming from Kishimoto.
The popular belief is the Fourth Hokage, which I don't really understand. He doesn't have the extra line around his pupil, and I don't get why people would think that he'd die for his village and then turn around and try to take over the world.
The only other guess I have is someone from the Uchiha clan.. Uchiha Madara, since not much is known about him. It is supported by the fact that Itachi told the leader that if Sasuke managed mangekyou sharingan, there would be three people who could handle it.
Obito doesn't make sense either since he's missing an eye.
Well, there are my two guesses. Hope that helped.

That is one of the most debated questions ever.
Some people think that it is the 4th Hokage. :|
Others believe the leader is within the Uchiha bloodline.
-Theory that i go on-
The Akatsuki leader has to be an old character, strong, and also famous (to get the members to join.)
Now 2 of the possibilities are that it is either Shisue (Who Uchiha Itachi 'killed' in order to obtain the Mangekyou sharingan) and Obito was in the Kakashi Gaiden Arc.. and Obito is presumed dead (he was crushed under a boulder, so before he died he transfered half his sharingan to Kakashi.) .. Both presumed dead, but what the hell xD.
But on the other hand, on the incident what Kisame see's Kakashi's Sharingan, he makes a remark about how he thought Itachi only had Sharingan - Which rules out any suspected Uchiha involvment.. Right?
And now that leaves.... The 4th Hokage! - It is terribly cheesy, but the best theory that's been broadcast...

I think that the fourth Hokage is still alive and that he is the leader of the Akatsuki because if you look at the pictures in the manga chapters, there's one picture (cant remember chapter #) where it shows a silhoutte of him. And the outline is identical to the fourth Hokage's. So therefore, I rest my case

I think the Akatsuki leader is some random evil guy, you know, almost completely alienated from the storyline. Which reminds me: I'd better get the next one! Thanks!

I think Naruto sucks so much, it has no good story. The scene drags on and on and has no good art either. It makes me sleep when I watch it...
