The town of Maycomb is based on Harper Lee's hometown of Monroeville Alabama. In the novel, in chapter one, the first few pages are dedicated to the history of the fictional town. If that is what you need, check out pages 2-4 or so.

I am not sure, except to say that Maycomb county was the northern most county in Alabama and when Alabama succeeded from the Union, Maycoumb county succeeded from Alabama.

Somewhere in the book, it tells about one man who set up a tavern in a certain spot by the river, and then the town just started from there. However, people never really move there, and it's in Alabama.
