Respect is to be earned, not assumed based on age or rank. If someone is worthy of respect, show them respect. If they are not, don’t. The same goes for disrespect, but if you are worthy of respect yourself you will just walk away and ignore the person. How can you respect someone who does not show you respect, or does not deserve respect?

Age is not something to base respect on. You may believe that our elders have years of experience over us. This may be true, but what kind of experience? You have no idea what they have learned or how far they may have fallen. They could have learned nothing more than how to cook crack, or they could have learned how to save people’s lives.
Rank is not something to base your respect for someone on either. People will cheat and lie to advance in the world. Do you really respect someone who could have lied to you? I know that would set me back on respecting them, unless they prove that they have changed. In addition, people in authority, like the cops, can’t handle the responsibility of that position; no one can, so you must watch out.

Needless to say, this also includes: race, location, gender, height, opinion, social status, background and anything along those lines. Forming an opinion on someone for these reasons would be nothing more than ignorant. All people are equal, no matter when, where, or how they grew up. Not agreeing with someone is not a reason to show them less respect than they deserve.
I am not saying to disrespect your elders. I am not saying to disrespect people who are higher than you. What I am saying is to earn your respect, and respect others who earn it. You have to judge the personality, morals, beliefs, and actions. Not how old they are, or what position they hold.

Respect is assumed until that respect is broken by one or both parties. Although, I would have to say if you are respectful to all people regardless, then you would be practicing the Golden Rule. "Do to others as you would like them to do to you." So be respectful and then respect will be returned regardless of what they are doing to you. Have a nice evening!

I agree with you about respecting every person equally no matter what there stats are but I think everyone should respect everyone in the first place. You can lose respect for people or gain more respect dependsing on if you admire them or not, but you should respect everyone to begin with no matter who they are.

I'm going to use the dictionary for this one...
According to it these are some definitions of respect:
1. esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability: I have great respect for her judgment.
2. deference to a right, privilege, privileged position, or someone or something considered to have certain rights or privileges; proper acceptance or courtesy; acknowledgment: respect for a suspect's right to counsel; to show respect for the flag; respect for the elderly.
3. the condition of being esteemed or honored: to be held in respect.
4. Archaic. a consideration. –verb (used with object)
5. to hold in esteem or honor: I cannot respect a cheat.
6. to show regard or consideration for: to respect someone's rights.
7. to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with: to respect a person's privacy.
1-3 and 5 I believe are earned, 4, 6-7 are somewhat earned as long as someone doesn't try to force me to do or agree with something then I extend 5 to them, I have 7 for everyone's right to live, survive, believe or speak as they wish as long as they do not try to force me to give up those same rights and we should have 8 for everyone unless there is so kind of proof that they are involved in a crime such as murder, rape, hurting a child or stealing and invading their privacy in such cases should be left to the police and crime labs trying to solve the crime.
So most forms of respect should be earned and are always subjected to the possibility of being loss. I don't believe in giving respect based on age or rank but I will try to be polite to all and if something upsets me I will indeed walk away or ignore the material or person unless it takes from me my right to live or survive in which case I will fight. I only respect someone's right to live, survive, believe or speak as they wish but this in no way means I am required to listen, care or even dwell in the same environment as that person. It just means I don't have the right to kill them, maim them or try to stop them from believing or speaking. I just move on and if asked my opinion be as tactful and honest as I can or otherwise tell them it is none of their business.

i could sense you are very passionate about this issue. i have to agree with you for most of your points, repect is to be earned. however, i believe in giving automatic respect to people older than me, that is until they show unworthiness of the respect i have for them. So i guess for the elderly, respect is assumed and disrespect is earned.

I agree. Respect can't be forced on anyone.
Our elders however can teach us a lot if we are willing to listen.

From a certain perspective, yes - I'd agree with that. On the other hand, we are human animals with certain core-level traits. One of those, which finds its roots in the reptilian layer of the human brain, is to follow leaders. (Hard wired.)
