First look at gehrig's profile on baseball almanac (below) to find out what years he started more than half the games at first base.
Then look at the years before and after that to find out who the starting 1B was.
follow the link for each player and look at the career HR column.

and there you have it.

Ok, Lou Gehrig played first base for the Yankees from 1923-1939. He replced someone with a headache, and the person who replaced him first on May 2, 1939, was sold by the yankees in 1941.

Wally Pipp was the player that sat down with a headache and lost his job. Babe Dahlgren was the firstbaseman that replaced the Iron Horse.

Pipp hit .295 9 Home Runs 113 RBI in 1924

Dahlgren hit .235 15 Home Runs 89 RBI in 1939

Wally Pip was there before. He asked for the day off because he had a head ache and never started for the Yankees again.

He replaced Wally Pipp and was replaced by Babe Dalgren. I'd tell you their respective HRs but you said that you wanted to find it yourself. You can check with mlb.com under stats. type their name where is says 'historical' stats.
