GM uses a security system called pass-lock II. They often get confused. Make sure you are using the OEM key and not one you had made. Since the keys have a resistor in them if you use a aftermarket key it won't start. If you are using the OEM key Try unhooking a battery cable for about 15 min. this will reset the system. Radio Frequency ID still works off of Resistance.

it is probably the security system that is malfunctioning. it could be the key or it could be the security system itself. a gm dealer could cut you a new key and program it to ensure that it is not the key. if it is the security module, then the BCM will need replaced, which is about $300-500. a key is only $35-50+programming. As for anyone that might say resistor, yours does not have a resistor. It has a RFID chip in the head of the key. The older grand ams (about 97 and older) have a resistor in the head of the key.

Try having a new key cut at a GM dealer. They should use a punch cutter this Sometimes works. Good luck if not it will need to go to a shop for dia. Could be passkey on the ign cyl.

try this. put a battery charger on the car. turn the key in the run position for ten minutes. turn the car off. repeat two more times for a total of three times. the light should go out and the car will start. that's how you manually reprogram the pass key.

There is a chip in your key called a resistor. When that resistor goes bad you need to have a new one made. Keep your fingers crossed that fixes it because if not it will need a new anti-theft module which is a little pricey. Hope that helps. Good Luck!!!

I have run into this a couple of times, both different problems, could be the gem module or there is a module at the ignition, I would take it to a repair facility that can scan the system.

you have a pass lock problem, if you put the wrong key in, it may time out, other wise you'll need to take it to the dealer
