No, I don't think we do. For one, human culture would not exist without our ability and tendency to create and use symbols. In fact, the defining thing which makes us human, language, IS a symbolic system. The human mind thrives on abstractions, or else we would not be where we are today because we would not be able to concieve of the things we've created: technology, language, religion, etc.

some do and others do not. depends upon what the symbol is and what interpretation is placed upon it by others. there can be the same symbol used and two or more individuals cultures, societies, nations, etc. might interpret and place different meanings on it. as an example if an owl appeared there are some who say this is a symbol Death is coming while another may interpret life or wisdom.

I don't think so. I think a lot of symbols today represent a lot about our past. They are very important to the mind, some symbols are even unseen by the consciuos mind and picked up by the unconscious mind. You unconscious mind picks up more meaning than the conscious mind. like thr moon id a symbol of endings, begginings, the end of a 28 day period, or menstration period. Think about it.

I don't think we give them enough power; or rather, I don't think we're fully aware of the power they hold.
