Stalin and the Soviet Union reneged on the Yalta agreements to allow democratic elections in eastern Europe after the second world war. This coupled with the discovery of massive espinage by the Soviets in Britian and the USA caused the eventuial split between the former allies.

It never got hot because us and the Russians had the power, so we thought, to destroy each other. Otherwise, We or the Russians would have started another war for Europe. There was an idea at the time MAD. Mutually Assured Destruction. It meant that if one side tossed a bomb, the other side would and would destroy each other. So nothing is accomplished. Rarely are wars, or fights for that matter, started with someone who you think can whip you.
Fortunately for us, I was a soldier then, it never happened. We bluffed each other, until our economy overcame the USSR and they collapsed. Reagan defeated communism without firing a shot.

The U.S. and the Soviet Union differed on how to reconstruct the postwar world even before the end of WWII. There was never a major battle between the two, so it was called "cold". The division of Germany and especially east and west Berlin was a particular sticking point. It eventually spread to the rest of the world.
