Try the In Death series by JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts), Kim Harrison's series, Lincoln Rhyme series by Jeffrey Deaver, the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay, Patricia Cornwell's books, Sue Grafton's alphabet series
If you are looking for anything a little lighter try the Sookie Stackhouse books (Southern Vampire series) by Charlaine Harris.
For even lighter than that try Janet Evanovich's series (they are all numbered), MaryJanice Davidson's Betsy series (Undead and....), Michele Bardsley's I'm The Vampire That's Why.
Also, I know they are geared more towards kids but the Harry Potter series is actually pretty good.
You may also want to ask your local librarians. My library made a booklet with lists of authors under various subjects and also under headings like, "If you like Author X, try books by these authors"

Even before I saw your mention of Anne Rice, I thought of the Anita Blake-Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The early books are awesome with plenty of action and a whole new world of legalized vamps set in the modern St. Louis area. Anita works for the police department and also a private agency, but specialized in the paranormal. A gutsy heroine and lots of other-worldly creatures make it fascinating.

I would recommend Hamilton's Merry Gentry series rather than Anita Blake (I could never get into that one.) I'd also recommend Stephen King's Dark Tower series and Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat series. You might also like to check out Anne Rice's son, Christopher Rice. His first two novels were very good.

the Diana Gabaldon time travelling books. They are fabulous... and will keep you interested until about the last book when she needed a better editor.
The Outlander series... The first three are worth everything. Try your public library for the first one to see if you like them
For really good mystery series... Elizabeth George's Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers stories...

Don't limit yourself to the adult section of your bookstore or library. Look for some of these series in the young adult section, I have really enjoyed these with my kids:
Pendragon by DJ MacHale
Charlie Bone
Wizard by Diane Duane
Also you might try The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkin
Any of Steve Barry's books
The Mists of Avalon by M.Z. Bradley
The Expected One by K. McGowan
Happy reading, Happy Holidays!

Try David Weber's 'Honor Harrington' series, better than Star Trek or Star Wars, in my opinion. Or maybe John Ringo's new series with these books in order: GHOST, KILDAR and CHOOSERS OF THE SLAIN. Great reads all. Or any of the books written by Mathew Reilly.

Wow that's hard...after Anne Rice...hm. I don't believe anyone write quite like Anne Rice, she does have a way with descriptions. However, the His Dark Materials trilogy was pretty good, it's by Philip Pullman, you should check it out.

Jacqueline Carey's "Kushiel" series-- kushiel's Chosen, Kushiel's Dart and Kushiel's Avatar-- are wild, descriptive, and deep.
If you like Victorian era novels, Anne Perry's two series, Inspector Thomas Pitt (who solves mysteries with the help of his wife and sister-in-law, and who challenges the bogus authorities of his time) and William Monk (amnesiac detective)/ Hester Latterly (fiesty nurse) are good, espeically the earlier ones.

Well, my favorite series is by Lois McMaster Bujold. Start with "Curse of Chalion" and move onto "Paladin of Souls." It's a fantasy series, but it's better written than any other series I've read in years.
