See if you can scratch something with it. A diamond will scratch, fake won't. Or, take it for appraisal. It shouldn't cost over $20.00.

The fog test:
Hold the ring up to your mouth, and breathe heavily on it. A diamond disperses heat so quickly that by the time you take it away from your mouth, the diamond has cleared. A CZ, or other imitation, will stay fogged (looks cloudy) for several seconds, plenty of time to tell.

Scratching glass isn't reliable. Many modern synthetics can also scratch glass. And depending on the setting, you may not be able to get an edge of the diamond to try it anyway.

If you still can't tell, take it to any local jewelry store or jeweler. They have a special tool that sends a laser through the stone. If it bounces back, the tool will beep, and it's real. If it doesn't, then it's a fake. They will do this for free with any piece of jewelry.

You can take it to a jeweler you can test it with a heat index. However Moissanite is synthetic but is realistic it will test as a diamond so make sure the jeweler tests for that too. This should be free but appraisals can cost about $100. One way to tell is if the stone looks too perfect. ALL diamonds have inclusions because they come from the earth.

A real diamond will scratch glass. Also take it to get appraised. If the metal part of it is real gold (check inside will say 14k or 10k) it might be a real stone.

you have to have it looked at by an appraiser to be sure. I bought a ring from a reputable jewelry store less then a week later the white gold faded and the "diamonds" were smaller than the original ring that they were supposed to be sizing

You'd have to get it tested by a gemologist. If it's a high-quality cubic zirconia even a gemologist can't tell without a high-powered microscope.
